Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall C-
ValueF NeedA- TradesB+ FutureD
A mixed bag for the Panthers, and a C- to match.

The Panthers did not so much draft Jacobe Covington as overpay for him, 335 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

For all the activity, offensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Hit on Luther Burden III and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Luther Burden III
In slot 8 they get a matchup problem out wide, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick18 Rnd1 Jacobe Covington
In the 18th overall pick they get a sticky cover corner, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick74 Rnd3 Ahmed Hassanein
A wild overpay on Ahmed Hassanein in the 74th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick111 Rnd4 Thor Griffith
Thor Griffith in Round 4, Pick 9 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick114 Rnd4 Maliq Carr
They reached a country mile for Maliq Carr at pick No. 114, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick140 Rnd5 Karene Reid
Karene Reid at pick 140 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick146 Rnd5 Luke Elzinga
They talked themselves into Luke Elzinga at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick163 Rnd5 Tyler Batty
Value said wait; Tyler Batty in pick 163 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
