Draft Grade — Browns
Overall C+
ValueF NeedB+ TradesB FutureB-
The Browns bet the future on Beck. The board says C+.

They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Jared Brown, 318 picks early at the Round 5 slot. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.

That Rivers pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The whole projection now runs through Carson Beck; hit there and everything else looks smarter.

That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

If Carson Beck and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick6 Rnd1 Carson Beck
In the 6th pick they get a franchise quarterback, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick28 Rnd1 Francis Mauigoa
They will replay Francis Mauigoa at pick 28 for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick39 Rnd2 Caleb Banks
Caleb Banks slid further than he should have, and the 39th overall pick is lovely value for the edge rusher. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick70 Rnd3 Jeremiah Cobb
A big swing on Jeremiah Cobb at No. 70, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick104 Rnd4 Conner Weigman
They talked themselves into Conner Weigman at Round 4, Pick 4, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick107 Rnd4 James Smith
James Smith at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick139 Rnd5 Jared Brown
They reached into another round for Jared Brown, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick141 Rnd5 A.J. Haulcy
Taking A.J. Haulcy in slot 141 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick144 Rnd5 Malachi Fields
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick 144 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick147 Rnd5 Ar'maj Reed-Adams
By-the-book stuff, Ar'maj Reed-Adams at No. 147 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick206 Rnd6 Chandler Rivers
Somehow Chandler Rivers was still sitting there in pick No. 206, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick248 Rnd7 Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan in the Round 7 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
