Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall D-
ValueF NeedB- TradesF FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Panthers to a D-.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Panthers did exactly that with Ty French in the 146th pick.

That Baron pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and safety is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Deone Walker
In No. 8 they get an anchor for the defensive front, though the board says they badly overpaid. Need was not the driver here.
Pick56 Rnd2 Dayon Hayes
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dayon Hayes well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick57 Rnd2 Jared Ivey
A wild overpay on Jared Ivey in Round 2, Pick 25, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick111 Rnd4 Brandon Adams
Brandon Adams at slot 111 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick114 Rnd4 Antwane Wells Jr.
A big swing on Antwane Wells Jr. at pick 114, well ahead of any board in the building. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick140 Rnd5 Torricelli Simpkins III
This one needs a full-page explanation: Torricelli Simpkins III in pick No. 140, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick146 Rnd5 Ty French
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ty French this early at No. 146. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick163 Rnd5 Shemar James
They reached a country mile for Shemar James at slot 163, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick230 Rnd7 Tyler Baron
They barely believed it either: Tyler Baron still on the board at pick No. 230. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
