Draft Grade — Vikings
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesB FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Vikings for Fields: B.

Somebody in the 97th pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Vikings sat still while Malachi Fields, the No. 73 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Good, not great, and the B says as much.

They are betting Moss proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

The trade work was a quiet net positive. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick26 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In Round 1, Pick 26 they get a green-dot type in the middle, and a steal at that.
Pick49 Rnd2 Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren is a better player than the Round 2 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick60 Rnd2 Jake Slaughter
A quiet steal in slot 60: Jake Slaughter for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick82 Rnd3 Lee Hunter
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Lee Hunter reach the 82nd pick and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick97 Rnd3 Malachi Fields
Malachi Fields at No. 97 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick161 Rnd5 Sam Roush
A reasonable price with a little left over, Sam Roush in the 161st overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick166 Rnd5 Le'Veon Moss
They left a pile of value on the table to take Le'Veon Moss this early at pick 166. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick194 Rnd6 Thaddeus Dixon
Thaddeus Dixon at pick No. 194 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick220 Rnd7 Riley Mahlman
Riley Mahlman at No. 220 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick234 Rnd7 J. Michael Sturdivant
Nothing to complain about; J. Michael Sturdivant went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick240 Rnd7 Tony Grimes
No edge and no loss on Tony Grimes in slot 240; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
