The Texans did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Texans did exactly that with J. Michael Sturdivant in Round 4, Pick 30.
That Miller pick is the receipt they will wave around later. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Caleb Tiernan
In the 30th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
No edge and no loss on Emmanuel Pregnon in No. 38; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick59
Rnd2
Christen Miller
Christen Miller in slot 59 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick69
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
They jumped the gun on Zakee Wheatley, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick94
Rnd3
Harold Perkins Jr.
Harold Perkins Jr. in the 94th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick106
Rnd4
Jaishawn Barham
Jaishawn Barham at pick 106 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick128
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart in pick 128 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick130
Rnd4
J. Michael Sturdivant
They left a pile of value on the table to take J. Michael Sturdivant this early at the Round 4 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick165
Rnd5
Hykeem Williams
A wild overpay on Hykeem Williams in No. 165, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick243
Rnd7
Noah Thomas
They talked themselves into Noah Thomas at slot 243, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick244
Rnd7
Haynes King
A reasonable price with a little left over, Haynes King in the 244th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
