Draft Grade — Saints

Good, not great, for the Saints: B-.

For all the names on the card, the loudest question went unanswered. The Saints walked out of the weekend still thin at edge rusher, a hole that has a way of deciding seasons.

If Reed-Adams pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Landing McKinney that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick5 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In pick 5 they get the heartbeat of the defense, though they paid up to get him.
Pick36 Rnd2 Chris Bell
Chris Bell at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick72 Rnd3 Darrell Jackson Jr.
Darrell Jackson Jr. slid further than he should have, and slot 72 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick129 Rnd4 Ar'maj Reed-Adams
Ar'maj Reed-Adams in Round 4, Pick 29 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick138 Rnd4 DJ McKinney
DJ McKinney at the 138th overall pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick146 Rnd5 Tim Keenan III
Tim Keenan III in the 146th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick169 Rnd5 Duce Robinson
A reach on Duce Robinson in No. 169; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick185 Rnd6 Bud Clark
This one needs a full-page explanation: Bud Clark in pick No. 185, miles early. A minor itch, scratched.
