Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB- TradesA+ FutureB-
Grand theft in slot 111: the Commanders steal Royer and grade out a B.

The board owed the Commanders one, and it paid up: Joe Royer, the No. 69 name on the board, sitting there at the 111th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep.

Reaching for Owens II left real value on the table behind him. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Spending an early pick on linebacker with quarterback and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In pick 13 they get a three-down second-level presence. Need was not the driver here.
Pick49 Rnd2 Sonny Styles
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Sonny Styles while clear needs at quarterback and interior defensive lineman sat open.
Pick61 Rnd2 A.J. Haulcy
By-the-book stuff, A.J. Haulcy at the 61st pick squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick71 Rnd3 Malachi Fields
They paid a round early for Malachi Fields in slot 71, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick97 Rnd3 Chase Bisontis
Chase Bisontis at Round 3, Pick 33 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick111 Rnd4 Joe Royer
Joe Royer at the Round 4 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick146 Rnd5 Eric O'Neill
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Eric O'Neill well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick186 Rnd6 Thaddeus Dixon
A straight-up fair deal on Thaddeus Dixon at pick No. 186, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick197 Rnd6 Trey Zuhn III
A premium they did not need to pay, Trey Zuhn III a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick223 Rnd7 Rueben Owens II
They reached into another round for Rueben Owens II, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
