Powerful DRAFTING FOR THETexans
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Texans
Overall

FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Texans, and a B- to prove it. The Texans bet big and early on VJ Payne, 31 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
Hunter at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Running back is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In No. 28 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker. A real need, handled.
Pick38
Rnd2
Gennings Dunker
Gennings Dunker at the 38th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick59
Rnd2
Lee Hunter
A slide stopped in Round 2, Pick 27, with Lee Hunter worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick69
Rnd3
Max Iheanachor
Max Iheanachor at pick No. 69 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick106
Rnd4
Mike Washington Jr.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mike Washington Jr.. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick128
Rnd4
Nate Boerkircher
They left a pile of value on the table to take Nate Boerkircher this early at the Round 4 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick165
Rnd5
VJ Payne
A big swing on VJ Payne at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick243
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
They took Trey Zuhn III at par in Round 7, Pick 27, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick244
Rnd7
Robert Spears-Jennings
A reach for Robert Spears-Jennings in the 244th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
