Draft Profile: Bio
McDuffie was a four-star recruit and was highly recruited from a number of top schools but ultimately opted for the Washington Huskies.He made an impact as a freshman starting 11 games while playing in 752 snaps and logging 41 tackles but surrendered a 94.3 QB rating when targeted - despite this he was considered a possibility for the Pac-12 Freshman Defensive Player of the Year award.
In 2020 McDuffie only had a chance to play four games due to the season being shortened for COVID reasons but up his productivity and finished with a QB rating of 52.1 when targeted. This resulted in him receiving a second-team All-Pac-12 nod.
In his junior year with the Huskies, he played 702 total snaps while only giving up a QB rating of 52.0 after being targeted 36 times. McDuffie received first-team, all-conference honors from Pac-12 coaches, Pro Football Focus, West Coast CFB, and the Associated Press. The AP also named him to the third team of its All-America team for his impressive 2021 campaign.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Aware in the red zone, stays on the back line to take away fade throws. Capable of making quarterbacks pay for late throws.
- An excellent athlete with top level explosiveness, speed and quickness
- Elite athlete at high school logged a 4.47 40-yard dash and McDuffie also had a 41.5-inch vertical at Washington’s combine in June, which was the best on the team that day, and had the best broad jump at 10-9.5
- Quick twitch player with the speed and quickness to recover from any miss-step in coverage
- Has a quality back peddle is fluid in his transitions
- Is an excellent man defender - who mirrors receivers with confidence and recognizes routes quickly
- Very good straight line speed - will not be beaten deep
- Has had experience at WR and has the hands to prove it
- Very aggressive attacking receiver blocks and tackles like a safety.
- Equally good as a zone corner with natural instincts
- Gives up his body in run support with a very good closing burst.
- Has good football awareness to read and react quickly and stay balanced and patient in space.
- Good strength to tackle. Plays with high energy and is a tough-minded overachiever.
- Plays the ball as if it was thrown for him, showing burst back to the ball as well as good timing for the jump ball.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- NFL quarterbacks may take advantage of his aggressiveness in man and zone to eye up short routes and go over the top
- Can be dominated by taller bigger receivers and tight ends - will need to get stronger
- Doesn't have elite length and doesn't always wrap up tackles how you would like
- Holds the ball loosely after an interception. Inconsistent in run support. Only an average tackler
- Has tense ankles and hips with choppy footwork when attempting to redirect and doesn't always look natural changing directions.
Scouting Report: Summary
McDuffie doesn't have the perfect size for the cornerback position when compared to others in the class such as Derek Stingley, however, in our opinion, his major negatives end there. He has elite speed and quickness combined with a natural feel for tight coverage who often blankets the opposing team's top receiver with ease while being a solid tackler who isn't afraid of contact. He also has for the most part avoided injuries despite being involved in a lot of action.We consider McDuffie to be an elite prospect who could quite easily become a lockdown corner at the next level and excel in both man and zone coverage. He's likely going to hear his name called at the end of the first round, however, he's worth a top 15 selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.
