Draft Profile: Bio
Myjai Sanders was a three-star recruit who prepped at Camden County HS for Coach Bob Sphire during his senior season. ESPN.com ranked him among the Top-75 defensive ends in the 2018 class. A few schools were interested in him but he opted to join the BearcatsHe didn't play his freshman year but impacted as a sophomore where in 14-games as a starter at defensive end, he emerged as one of the top edge rushers in the AAC and totaled 36 tackles, including 19 solo stops, tallied 7.0 tackles for a loss and his 4 sacks ranked second on the team.
In 2020 he upped his game further - Sanders had a team-best 10.5 tackles for a loss with 7 sacks and received First-Team All-AAC honors. Both his marks ranked him among the Top-10 defenders in the AAC and was a semifinalist for the 2020 Bednarik Award for his performance as a junior.
As a senior has put up excellent numbers while playing in 14 games for the Bearcats - he logged 5 sacks and a massive 45 QB hurries which led to an AAC first-team selection.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Difficult evaluation - he doesn't have great timed speed but when you watch it doesn't show. He looks incredibly fast and chases backs down from behind
- Really great first step with excellent explosion off the line - manages to consistently beat bigger offensive linemen off the edge
- An instinctive natural pass rusher - really relentless in pursuit of the QB
- Great hand speed with a nice bag of pass-rushing tricks including bull rushes and swipes
- Has fluid footwork to redirect, reverse momentum and close with a burst. Regularly first off the ball with good snap anticipation.
- Aggressive with good awareness to track the ball and attack. Tenacious, tough, competItIve and versatile.
- Easily gains inside leverage by shooting gaps.
- Relentless and strong off the edge as a pass rusher when fresh. Gets under the pads of tackles to bull rush them into the backfield.
- Offers some versatility, rushing from a two-and three-point stance with the playing speed to stand up in space. Flashes strength as a bull rusher and his energy doesn't plateau.
- Made Bruce Feldman's Freaks list at #20 -- The 6-5, 259-pounder from Jacksonville ran a 4.56 40 this offseason and an even more impressive 4.10 in the shuttle. Sanders also broad jumped 10-2 and had a vertical of 35 inches.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Doesn't stand up well against the run but is very pursuit-conscious and will take unneeded wide angles.
- Only average upper body strength - can get outmuscled in the running game - will need to get stronger
- Not a strong tackler and can be pushed aside by more powerful backs and too often takes bad angles
- Not consistent enough - doesn't always give his all
- Never out of a play, but can get out of control and work himself away from the action.
- Footwork is only average - must be worked on at the next level
- Bites on fakes and hard counts too often - needs to play smarter
- His numbers from the combine were underwhelming - Ran a 4.67 40 and his vertical jump (33) was less than billed. At only 228 Lbs
Scouting Report: Summary
Sanders checks most of the boxes you would like as a pass-rusher in the NFL: he's explosive, has natural pass-rushing instincts combined with great hands, however, he will need to get stronger if he is going to be more anything more than a situational pass-rushing specialist at the next level. It's debatable currently whether he can hold up as a three-down player in the pros. The combine will be especially important for Sanders where he will need to demonstrate strength and improved timed speed.
We expect Sanders to be a likely late second - early third-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.
