Draft Profile: Bio
A Canadian native Metchie was a high school standout and logged a massive 42 touchdowns during his high school playing career. This got the attention of college scouts and he was awarded a four-star rating and scholarship offer from the Crimson Tide.Alabama has been a wide receiver factory of late with Ruggs, Smith, and Waddle - and this limited Metchie's playing time early on. It wasn't until his sophomore season in 2020 did he break into the lineup and logged 916 yds and 6 TDs which lead to him receiving favorable comparisons to Miami's Jalon Waddle.
Metchie upped his performance in 2021 as a full-time starter despite sharing the field with fellow receiving superstar Jameson Williams - chalking up an outstanding 1045 yds and 7 TDs.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Has good body strength to squirm out of tackles with the coordination to maneuver his frame between defenders.
- Has excellent suddenness with lightning footwork to create in tight areas with elusive shiftiness and change-of-direction skills.
- Fits a zone system, can sift through oncoming traffic and explode through tiny creases and cutback lanes. Dangerous in the open field.
- Very quick and elusive, excellent change of direction and acceleration
- Very good hands accepts the ball fluidly on most throws and is ready to make a play afterward. Makes catches in traffic, even going up over taller defenders with vertical and toughness.
- Good effort and technique as a blocker for his size. Can beat the press with elusiveness or physical contact. Runs crisp routes with sharp cuts.
- Has elite balance tight-roping the sideline and in-and-out of his breaks, showing excellent start-stop ability and burst.
- Has the strong hands any NFL wide receiver coach and quarterback would covet. Tracks the deep ball over either shoulder and brings in passes fluidly without breaking stride downfield.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Does not always use his hands to secure deep throws, allowing the ball into his pads and chest.- we consider his hands to be merely good
- Has a slight frame and may get pushed around NFL press coverage corners
- Not great in contested catch situations and will get outmuscled off the ball
- Is more quick than fast and can not be described as a burner - doubts over his long speed
- Tore his ACL in the SEC Championship Game against the University of Georgia in December meaning he couldn't run at his pro day or the combine
Scouting Report: Summary
Metchie entered the 2021 college football season as an expected first-round pick and he hasn't disappointed looking like the potential first-round pick scouts were drooling over. He's quick, runs good routes, has some obvious explosion, and displays decent hands. However, some have questioned his long speed and these doubts only increased after he tore his ACL resulting in him missing the combine and Alabama's pro day. Before Metchie tore his ACL we viewed him as a possible first-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, however, we now expect in all likelihood he'll hear his name called in the latter half of the second and ultimately have a very productive pro career.
