Scouting Report: Strengths
- Looks to get involved downfield and will block multiple defenders on a single play when he can. Understands his role as a blocker.
- Gets a quick release off the line. Dips his shoulder and shows some savvy 8 as a route runner to avoid contact with defenders g to get into his route.
- Good strength and effort to run through arm tackles.
- Good overall blocking skills and can hold up against linebackers - though can struggle against bigger defensive linemen
- Decent overall athletic ability with nice height (6-5), wingspan (6'5") and weight (250lbs)
- Offers a lot of versatility - has played inline, out wide, and even lined up in the backfield
- Has good hand-eye coordination and body control to turn and adjust to poorly thrown balls.
- Good vision to set up blocks and while he isn't quick enough to elude in tight quarters, and takes advantage of a defender leaning to spring for additional yardage.
- Has smooth body control, an outstanding catch radius, reliable hands, and natural ball skills to adjust to off-target throws and make the impressive catch.
- Runs solid sharp crisp routes and has shown extremely good, soft, natural hands. Consistently makes the clean catch.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- High cut frame and limited power in hands prevent a top blocking grade
- His athletic overall athletic ability will limit his upside - doesn't have elite strength or speed
- Gets dominated as a blocker by stronger defenders - sometimes looks like a bulked-up wide receiver
- Not a mauler needs to get meaner at the line of scrimmage - but will at least be more aggressive in the passing game when fighting for the ball
- Not a big YAC guy and lacks explosion in the open field
- Is a bit high-hipped and slow to get rolling. Frame limits upside as a blocker.
- A glider, moves faster than he appears but lacks the top-end speed to be a real threat down the seam. More of a short and intermediate-range receiver
Scouting Report: Summary
Wisconsin's Jake Ferguson is a solid prospect with a limited upside due to him being neither particularly strong as a blocker nor fast as a receiver. He does however appear to have very good reliable hands, a good overall football IQ along with nice length and the ability to fight for the ball in traffic. He looks like a player who will likely carve out a career for himself as second-string TE who will add a significant contribution as a special teamer. Expect him to be selected in the later rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft.Jake Ferguson percentiles vs other Tight Ends (NFL Combine historically - higher value represents better perfomance)
