Drafted: ROUND: 1 - Pick Number: 11 (NO)
Draft Profile: Bio
Chris Olave had some interest as an early-round prospect in last year’s class, but he opted to return to Ohio with the aim of improving his draft stock - and it looks like it was a wise choice.During the 2019 season, Olave led the Buckeyes with 849 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns that was showcased with an impressive 17.3 yards per catch. He continued his rise to national attention in the interrupted 2020 season where he dominated with 729 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns and received first-team All-Big Ten recognition as a result.
2021 is also looking very promising where Olave (as of November 29, 2021) has 936 yards and 13 touchdowns
Scouting Report: Strengths
- A savvy, natural pass-catcher with reliable hands and very good focus. Snatches the ball out of the air and shows the concentration to make acrobatic catches look easy.
- More impressive than his overall speed is his burst. Olave demonstrates an ability to slide past defensive backs at the line of scrimmage.
- He has some of the best hands in the country at wide receiver, which will serve him well in the pros.
- Fluid athlete with explosive burst and speed to stretch the field and breeze past defenders. Has a quick first step and gets to top speed in a hurry.
- An impressive athlete with very quick acceleration to reach his top speed quickly and stretch the field. Very good body control and smooth movements
- Has elite balance tight-roping the sideline and in-and-out of his breaks, showing excellent start-stop ability and burst.
- Often used on deep routes, getting separation down the sideline or over the middle on crossing routes by extending his arms rather than pure speed.
- Olave showcases impressive football intelligence and awareness. He does an amazing job of finding soft spots in opposing defenses.
- Very impressive athlete - as a junior Olave ran a 10.8-second 100-meter time while leaping to an impressive 23’6″ in the long jump. Backed this up at the combine where he ran an official 4.39 in the 40
- Has the strong hands any NFL wide receiver coach and quarterback would covet. Tracks the deep ball over either shoulder and brings in passes fluidly without breaking stride downfield.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Does not always use his hands to secure deep throws, allowing the ball into his pads and chest.
- At 6’1″ and 189 pounds, Olave’s game lacks the physicality to consistently win on the outside, but can be productive working the middle of the field. May be limited to a slot-only player. Can be pressed and taken out of play at the line of scrimmage
- Was only ranked as the 68th best receiver in the class and the 399th player in the nation coming out of high school
- Doesn't always make as much yardage after the catch as you would hope given his speed and quickness
- Doesn't have the size to consistently win on the outside, but can be productive working the middle of the field and as a return man
Scouting Report: Summary
Despite his size, Olave is developing into a top-level NFL prospect that will have a chance to dominate at the next level. He has elite speed and a surprising catch radius with excellent hands giving him the potential for circus catches. He however is very slight and will not survive on the outside against stronger NFL corners - will be limited to the slot in the pros.Ohio State hasn’t had a first-round receiver since Ted Ginn, but that looks to change - where it's not a question of if he'll go in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but just how high. Our best guess is the middle of round one after he put on a show at the combine.
