FutureF
The board had answers; the Lions had Clowney. Grade: F. The Demon Clowney pick is the one that will follow the Lions into the fall. They took him 253 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. There is no dressing it up: a F.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Lions indulged a want in Capehart while a need in quarterback, running back and other spots stayed open. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not. The Downs pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left quarterback open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In the 17th pick they get a downhill hitter at safety at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick50
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles is a better player than the 50th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick77
Rnd3
Keith Abney II
No edge and no loss on Keith Abney II in pick 77; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick85
Rnd3
C.J. Fite
A real head-scratcher, C.J. Fite in Round 3, Pick 21 is miles ahead of his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick86
Rnd3
Monroe Freeling
A wild overpay on Monroe Freeling in No. 86, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick87
Rnd3
DeMonte Capehart
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, DeMonte Capehart adds an interior defensive lineman and leaves quarterback, running back and other spots untouched.
Pick118
Rnd4
Princewill Umanmielen
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Princewill Umanmielen. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick131
Rnd4
Aaron Graves
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Aaron Graves at interior defensive lineman with quarterback, running back and other spots open.
Pick135
Rnd4
Vincent Anthony Jr.
Vincent Anthony Jr. in Round 4, Pick 35 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick157
Rnd5
Da'Shawn Womack
Value said wait; Da'Shawn Womack in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick163
Rnd5
Demon Clowney
Demon Clowney at the 163rd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick184
Rnd6
Korey Foreman
They reached into another round for Korey Foreman, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick193
Rnd6
Solomon Tuliaupupu
A big swing on Solomon Tuliaupupu at pick 193, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick195
Rnd6
Keaten Wade
Keaten Wade in pick No. 195 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick205
Rnd6
Josh Moten
By-the-book stuff, Josh Moten at pick No. 205 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick223
Rnd7
Marquis Johnson
They talked themselves into Marquis Johnson at slot 223, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
Pick254
Rnd7
Robert Spears-Jennings
Good price on Robert Spears-Jennings in pick 254, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick256
Rnd7
James Williams Sr.
James Williams Sr. at No. 256 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
