Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Patriots a B-.

The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Fernando Carmona at No. 209 regardless, 61 picks early. No fireworks, but a solid B-.

The Patriots indulged a want in Rodriguez while a need in edge rusher and quarterback stayed open. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On value alone, Reese makes the weekend a net positive.

Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In the 30th overall pick they get a green-dot type in the middle at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Pick62 Rnd2 Dillon Thieneman
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Dillon Thieneman in the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94 Rnd3 Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at slot 94 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick130 Rnd4 Jacob Rodriguez
A surprising call. With edge rusher and quarterback still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 30 on Jacob Rodriguez, a linebacker they were not short of.
Pick131 Rnd4 Max Iheanachor
They reached into another round for Max Iheanachor, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick170 Rnd5 Darius Taylor
They paid sticker price for Darius Taylor in pick No. 170, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick192 Rnd6 Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Value with a capital V on Jermaine Mathews Jr. in the Round 6 slot, a genuine coup. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick193 Rnd6 Lee Hunter
Lee Hunter at the 193rd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick203 Rnd6 Jaren Kanak
A reach on Jaren Kanak in pick No. 203; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick209 Rnd6 Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona in pick 209 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick245 Rnd7 Brandon Inniss
They went early on Brandon Inniss in Round 7, Pick 30, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
