Draft Grade — Lions
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Lions.

The Lions spent real capital to be 78 picks early on Jalen Thompson, and the board is going to hold them to it. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Johnson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Jake Slaughter
In slot 18 they get a building block for the line, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick50 Rnd2 Austin Barber
Austin Barber in pick 50 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick118 Rnd4 Derrick Moore
Derrick Moore in pick No. 118 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick136 Rnd4 Chris Johnson
They barely believed it either: Chris Johnson still on the board at No. 136. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick158 Rnd5 Jacob Rodriguez
No edge and no loss on Jacob Rodriguez in Round 5, Pick 18; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick189 Rnd6 Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp at the Round 6 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick203 Rnd6 James Smith
A wild overpay on James Smith in the 203rd pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick223 Rnd7 Jalen Thompson
Jalen Thompson at Round 7, Pick 8 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
