Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Commanders for Altmyer: D-.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Commanders spent the 95th pick on Akheem Mesidor, a name the board had a full 35 spots lower. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Altmyer falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.

Pick Analysis
Pick7 Rnd1 Jeremiyah Love
In No. 7 they get a three-down runner. A real need, handled.
Pick31 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In slot 31 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
Pick71 Rnd3 A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy slipping to the 71st pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick95 Rnd3 Akheem Mesidor
Value said wait; Akheem Mesidor in the 95th overall pick says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick96 Rnd3 Kenyatta Jackson Jr.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kenyatta Jackson Jr. in the 96th pick, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick146 Rnd5 Iapani Laloulu
A straight-up fair deal on Iapani Laloulu at the 146th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick187 Rnd6 Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr. slid further than he should have, and pick No. 187 is lovely value for the cornerback. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick197 Rnd6 Evan Stewart
They let Evan Stewart come to them and pounced at Round 6, Pick 16. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick213 Rnd6 Trey Zuhn III
No edge and no loss on Trey Zuhn III in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick223 Rnd7 Peyton Bowen
Peyton Bowen at slot 223 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick247 Rnd7 Luke Altmyer
A quarterback of that caliber at pick 247 is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
