Somebody took the Eagles to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
The Wilson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Ladd McConkey at par in the 35th pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Jonah Elliss in pick No. 46; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A clean, defensible pick in the 54th overall pick with a little surplus value in Calen Bullock. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
By-the-book stuff, Brandon Dorlus at No. 59 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at pick 62, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A curious use of the 66th overall pick. Interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Payton Wilson did not.
Good price on Christian Mahogany in slot 84, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Johnny Wilson in the Round 3 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went DT-EDGE with Maason Smith while clear needs at interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots sat open.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cade Stover at TE-EDGE with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots open.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tykee Smith. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nothing to complain about; DJ James went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Sataoa Laumea in No. 119, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They did well to land Kris Abrams-Draine in the Round 4 slot, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
MarShawn Lloyd at Round 4, Pick 35 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Cody Schrader at pick No. 163 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Grayson Murphy at No. 164 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nice patience on Jaylin Simpson, who had no business lasting to the 167th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jaylan Ford in slot 172 is fair value, right on his grade. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Isaiah Williams at the 227th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Circle this one: Christian Jones at pick 239 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Somehow Jawhar Jordan was still sitting there in No. 243, and they pounced on premier running back value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
