The trade table was where it all came apart. The Eagles shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
The Eagles indulged a want in Wilson while a need in quarterback stayed open. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. They banked enough surplus on Pearsall to cover a lot of smaller sins.
The veteran additions, Breece Hall chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 9 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Ladd McConkey in pick 36 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nice patience on Kamren Kinchens, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Payton Wilson adds a linebacker and leaves quarterback untouched.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Gabriel Murphy in Round 3, Pick 28. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in pick No. 92, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Ricky Pearsall in the 95th overall pick, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tyler Davis in the 96th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Fair-plus on Bucky Irving, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Tykee Smith went about where he belonged in No. 99. It fills a real need, too.
Blake Fisher at pick 100 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Darius Robinson at Round 4, Pick 19 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
DJ James is a better player than the Round 4 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Justin Eboigbe slipping to No. 135 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Javion Cohen in the 147th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Theo Johnson at the 149th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Grayson Murphy at slot 163, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Cody Schrader at par in pick 164, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Layden Robinson at Round 6, Pick 2 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good price on Trey Knox in the Round 6 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Circle this one: Ethan Driskell at pick No. 204 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
