The search is over. The Vikings handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Driskell. They are betting McCarthy proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The Melton pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with safety, tight end and other spots still on the board.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
A real head-scratcher, J.J. McCarthy in the Round 1 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kris Jenkins in Round 2, Pick 10 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Khyree Jackson in pick No. 109 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A want over a need in No. 130: Max Melton adds a cornerback while safety, tight end and other spots keeps waiting.
No drama and no debate, Luke McCaffrey went about where he belonged in pick 145. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Keith Randolph Jr. in the 157th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Khristian Boyd in slot 166 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Braelon Allen at the 179th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Steal is underselling it; Ethan Driskell at the Round 7 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
