Minnesota Vikings

A solid, sensible weekend for the Vikings: B-.

by Skol · 2024 NFL Draft · 11 picks · 4 steals · 2 reaches

Future B-

The curious call sets the tone. With edge rusher, safety and other spots still glaring, the Vikings used No. 120 on Beau Brade, a defensive back they were not exactly short of. No fireworks, but a solid B-.

A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Brade has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.10 · Pick 42 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 42
J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 42 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.20 · Pick 52 · Denzel Burke · CB · rank 56
Denzel Burke at Round 2, Pick 20 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Michael Hall Jr. · DT · rank 87
Michael Hall Jr. at the 90th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.35 · Pick 98 · Audric Estime · RB · rank 107
Audric Estime in pick No. 98 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.20 · Pick 120 · Beau Brade · DB · rank 130
A want over a need in No. 120: Beau Brade adds a defensive back while edge rusher, safety and other spots keeps waiting.
R5.7 · Pick 143 · Jamon Dumas-Johnson · LB · rank 135
Jamon Dumas-Johnson at the 143rd pick is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Jack Nelson · OT · rank 148
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Jack Nelson graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.25 · Pick 161 · J. Michael Sturdivant · WR · rank 157
Fair-plus on J. Michael Sturdivant, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Malik Mustapha · DB · rank 160
Malik Mustapha slipping to pick 168 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster logic is harder to follow.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · BJ Mayes · CB · rank 171
They read the board right and BJ Mayes was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 4. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R7.21 · Pick 241 · Dwight McGlothern · DB · rank 236
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dwight McGlothern in pick No. 241. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
