The Vikings spent real capital to be 28 picks early on Trey Wedig, and the board is going to hold them to it. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. The Jones pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on J.J. McCarthy in pick 42; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach on T'Vondre Sweat in pick No. 49; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Blake Corum in the 80th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 111 with a little surplus value in Matt Goncalves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Khyree Jackson at the Round 4 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A minor itch, scratched.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cedric Johnson a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Jaylan Ford at Round 5, Pick 12, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jonah Monheim. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Malik Mustapha slid further than he should have, and pick No. 164 is lovely value for the safety. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Justin Eboigbe in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good price on Aki Ogunbiyi in slot 187, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A quiet steal in the 230th pick: Sheridan Jones for less than the market said. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A big swing on Trey Wedig at No. 238, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
