Minnesota Vikings

A passer of the future in Nix, and a B-, for the Vikings.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Vikings spent their marquee pick on Bo Nix, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

Every board in the league had Bortolini lower, and that gap is the story. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Brown steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Bo Nix · QB · rank 23
In slot 31 they get a franchise quarterback, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 35
They took Xavier Legette at par in pick 35, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 57
A wild overpay on Chris Braswell in Round 2, Pick 7, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 43
A straight-up fair deal on Kris Jenkins at the 42nd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 65
Payton Wilson at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 94
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in No. 92, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.31 · Pick 94 · Matt Goncalves · OT · rank 106
Matt Goncalves at pick No. 94 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Max Melton · CB · rank 112
By-the-book stuff, Max Melton at the 109th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.15 · Pick 115 · Leonard Taylor III · DL · rank 113
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Leonard Taylor III. The roster fit checks out.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 159
Braelon Allen at the 138th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Tanor Bortolini · C · rank 229
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tanor Bortolini well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Omar Brown · S · rank 202
They robbed the room for Omar Brown here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
