You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Vikings did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
Everything downstream of Drake Maye depends on Drake Maye, and the building knows it. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. That Muhammad pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
No drama and no debate, Brandon Dorlus went about where he belonged in slot 56. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Blake Corum at the 87th pick is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They took DeWayne Carter at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Fair-plus on Max Melton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Tommy Eichenberg at pick 130 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They robbed the room for Isaiah Adams here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 160 is the definition of value, full stop. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Sincere Haynesworth in pick 165 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Moose Muhammad III in the Round 5 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board had Jahdae Barron higher than No. 179, and the safety fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
You do not let a wide receiver like Kaden Prather reach slot 230 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board fumbled Jabbar Muhammad all the way to the 245th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
