Start where it matters. The Raiders took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Shipley.
They will need Liufau to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.31
· Pick 31
· J.J. McCarthy
· QB
· rank 29
In slot 31 they get the arm they will build around at fair value.
R2.16
· Pick 48
· Roman Wilson
· WR
· rank 46
By-the-book stuff, Roman Wilson at No. 48 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.31
· Pick 63
· Xavier Worthy
· WR
· rank 55
They let Xavier Worthy come to them and pounced at pick 63. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.22
· Pick 85
· Mike Sainristil
· CB
· rank 75
Mike Sainristil at the 85th overall pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.33
· Pick 96
· Christian Mahogany
· OG
· rank 98
They took Christian Mahogany at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.12
· Pick 112
· Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
· CB
· rank 112
Jarvis Brownlee Jr. at Round 4, Pick 12 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.25
· Pick 125
· Will Shipley
· RB
· rank 107
Will Shipley in the 125th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.12
· Pick 148
· Christian Jones
· OT
· rank 132
They read the board right and Christian Jones was the payoff at pick No. 148. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.20
· Pick 156
· Marist Liufau
· LB
· rank 166
A reach for Marist Liufau in No. 156; a little patience would have been rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R6.33
· Pick 208
· Johnny Dixon
· CB
· rank 190
They robbed the room for Johnny Dixon here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.45
· Pick 220
· Caedan Wallace
· OT
· rank 213
Nothing to complain about; Caedan Wallace went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.9
· Pick 229
· JD Bertrand
· LB
· rank 220
A quiet steal in slot 229: JD Bertrand for less than the market said. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
