The Vikings spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Tahj Washington, the No. 187 name on the board, in the Round 7 slot. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
Everything downstream of J.J. McCarthy depends on J.J. McCarthy, and the building knows it. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Every board in the league had Lovett lower, and that gap is the story.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 15 they get their quarterback of the future, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
No drama and no debate, Kamari Lassiter went about where he belonged in the 42nd overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Brenden Rice slid further than he should have, and Round 4, Pick 8 is lovely value for the wide receiver. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid sticker price for Isaac Guerendo in the 129th overall pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Hunter Nourzad in pick 155 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Layden Robinson in slot 163 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid up for Fabien Lovett at pick No. 167 when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
Tykee Smith in No. 177 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ty'Ron Hopper in the Round 6 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A minor itch, scratched.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jordan Jefferson in the 191st pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Garret Greenfield at the 217th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Johnny Dixon in No. 230 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Taking Tahj Washington in pick No. 248 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
