You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Texans did exactly that with T'Vondre Sweat in the 30th overall pick.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
That Simpson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Running back is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th pick they get a load in the middle, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
A reach on Ja'Tavion Sanders in the Round 2 slot; the board had better options right there. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had cheaper options than Cooper Beebe at No. 66, and it noticed. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Roman Wilson a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Marist Liufau in pick No. 90 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They went early on James Williams in the 114th overall pick, and the value did not follow. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They let Jaylin Simpson come to them and pounced at the 163rd overall pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A quiet steal in No. 170: Jaylen Wright for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
