You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Eagles did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Cowing. Spending an early pick on linebacker with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
Tyler Guyton at pick No. 31 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A clean, defensible pick in the 33rd pick with a little surplus value in Kool-Aid McKinstry. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the Round 2 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Fair-plus on Edgerrin Cooper, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Steal is underselling it; Ja'Tavion Sanders at slot 65 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, Jonah Elliss at Round 3, Pick 26 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dominick Puni. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cedric Gray at linebacker with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots open.
James Williams in Round 4, Pick 24 is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
A straight-up fair deal on Beaux Limmer at slot 130, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Luke McCaffrey is a better player than pick 164 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jacob Cowing at pick No. 200 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Taking Sione Vaki in the Round 6 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the 210th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled M.J. Devonshire all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good price on Caedan Wallace in No. 220, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
They read the board right and Keith Randolph Jr. was the payoff at pick No. 226. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A quiet steal in the 228th pick: Garret Greenfield for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
