The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Vikings reached some 98 spots for Joshua Cephus, and value like that does not grow back.
Whatever J.J. McCarthy becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.
Adding Preston Smith by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside, even if it was a touch early. Need was not the driver here.
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get their quarterback of the future. The biggest hole, addressed.
Blake Corum at pick No. 91 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid up for James Williams at slot 108 when waiting would have done the job. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A big swing on Dallin Holker at the 129th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Khristian Boyd well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Joshua Cephus in slot 167, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
Myles Cole in the 177th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for Charles Turner III at pick 230, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Daequan Hardy this early at No. 232. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
