The Braelon Allen pick is the one that will follow the Vikings into the fall. They took him 44 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
J.J. McCarthy gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Getting Colson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
Good price on Taliese Fuaga in the 21st overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
In pick 27 they get their guy under center for the next decade, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
By-the-book stuff, Byron Murphy II at slot 34 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, T'Vondre Sweat at Round 3, Pick 4. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
You do not let a linebacker like Junior Colson reach pick No. 108 and blink. They did not. A minor itch, scratched.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Braelon Allen well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Austin Booker. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Value with a capital V on LaDarius Henderson in slot 179, a genuine coup. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid sticker price for Erick All in pick No. 211, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Myles Jones slid further than he should have, and pick 230 is lovely value for the cornerback. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
