The Vikings bet big and early on Frank Gore Jr., 42 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Sainristil pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In pick No. 23 they get an island corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
In No. 27 they get a cornerstone up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
They let Bo Nix come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They took Jaylen Wright at par in the 66th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Mike Sainristil in Round 3, Pick 7 leaves tight end for later.
By-the-book stuff, Renardo Green at pick 72 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Javon Baker in No. 90 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Christian Mahogany at pick No. 104 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Matt Goncalves in the 106th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cedric Gray at slot 108 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid a round early for Tyler Davis in Round 4, Pick 11, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Justin Eboigbe at the Round 4 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jalyx Hunt a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jarrian Jones. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Mason McCormick is a better player than pick 157 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Value said wait; Jordan Jefferson in the 162nd pick says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Marist Liufau at Round 5, Pick 31 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Luke McCaffrey at the 177th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
Frank Gore Jr. at slot 185 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Garret Greenfield at the Round 7 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A real head-scratcher, Austin Reed in pick No. 232 is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Zion Logue at Round 7, Pick 36, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Tyrice Knight at slot 257 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
