Draft Profile: Bio
Camar Wheaton, a running back from SMU, entered college football as a highly touted five-star recruit. The Garland, Texas native was ranked as the top running back in the nation by Rivals coming out of Lakeview Centennial High School. Wheaton initially signed with Alabama but transferred to SMU after redshirting his freshman year.

At SMU, Wheaton saw limited action over two seasons. As a freshman in 2022, he appeared in 10 games with three starts, rushing for 322 yards and two touchdowns on 62 carries. His sophomore campaign in 2023 showed marginal improvement, with 410 yards and five touchdowns on 83 carries across 10 games, including one start.

Despite his lofty high school rankings, Wheaton's college production has been modest. He's averaged 4.9 yards per carry for his career at SMU, with a season-high of 80 yards against Tulsa in 2023. Wheaton has shown flashes of his big-play ability, including a 48-yard run, but has yet to fully translate his high school potential to the college level.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Explosive straight-line speed translates to big-play potential on every touch
  • Quick acceleration allows for sudden bursts through holes and into second level
  • Compact, NFL-ready frame with potential to add functional mass
  • One-cut ability fits zone schemes, can plant and go with authority
  • North-south runner who hits holes decisively when lanes are defined
  • Vision to find cutback lanes and set up blocks in space
  • High school pedigree suggests untapped potential for NFL development
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Limited college production raises concerns about translating physical tools to consistent on-field success
  • Minimal experience in passing game, only 10 receptions in college career
  • Pass protection needs significant improvement for three-down potential
  • Relies too heavily on speed, lacks nuanced running techniques
  • Struggles to string together moves at second level, limiting elusiveness
  • Tendency to bounce runs outside prematurely instead of trusting interior blocks
Scouting Report: Summary
Wheaton enters the draft as a speed merchant with untapped potential. His college tape shows flashes of brilliance but lacks the consistency scouts crave.

Best fit comes in a zone-heavy scheme that can leverage his one-cut ability and home run speed. Could provide immediate value as a change-of-pace back while developing a more complete skill set.

Development as a receiver and in pass protection will determine his path to consistent NFL playing time. Raw tools are evident, but Wheaton must prove he can translate athleticism into production at the next level.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
