Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals let Smith-Wade fall into their laps, and walked away with a D.

Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Cardinals, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. The math is unkind, and the D follows.

They are betting Reed proves the room right and everyone else wrong. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Smith-Wade pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.2 · Pick 2 · Marvin Harrison Jr. · WR · rank 1
In the 2nd pick they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.21 · Pick 21 · Dallas Turner · LB-EDGE · rank 22
In the Round 1 slot they get a double-digit-sack hope at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 31
Edgerrin Cooper in No. 36 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 45
Jordan Morgan at Round 2, Pick 7 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Sedrick Van Pran · C · rank 65
A straight-up fair deal on Sedrick Van Pran at the 66th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Tyler Davis · DT · rank 95
Tyler Davis at pick 100 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Max Melton · CB · rank 96
A slide stopped in pick No. 105, with Max Melton worth more than the price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R5.8 · Pick 144 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 136
Quietly one of the better values of the day, AJ Barner at Round 5, Pick 8. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.16 · Pick 191 · Miles Frazier · OG · rank 190
By-the-book stuff, Miles Frazier at the 191st pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Dominic Lovett · WR · rank 205
Taking Dominic Lovett in slot 223 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.9 · Pick 229 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 204
Chau Smith-Wade at pick 229 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R7.36 · Pick 256 · Austin Reed · QB · rank 278
Austin Reed at the 256th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
