The trade table was where it all came apart. The Texans shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
The Williams reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. McCoy falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They left with running back solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 24 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In No. 27 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Emeka Egbuka in pick 33. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Leonard Taylor III at the 53rd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Zak Zinter, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Somehow Cooper DeJean was still sitting there in Round 3, Pick 26, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
James Williams at the Round 3 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A reach on Junior Colson in the 95th pick; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Bucky Irving at slot 121 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Ben Sinnott in pick 124 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Joe Milton III at No. 126 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
They read the board right and T.J. Sanders was the payoff at pick No. 158. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Gabriel Murphy at Round 5, Pick 38. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They will replay Chau Smith-Wade at the 240th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Bru McCoy in the 242nd pick, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
