Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B.

There is reaching, and then there is Elijah Simmons at Round 7, Pick 7. The Cardinals jumped the board by 97 and dared it to prove them wrong. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The Jackson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots still on the board.

A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Malik Nabers · WR · rank 4
In the 4th pick they get a home-run threat at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.27 · Pick 27 · JC Latham · OT · rank 18
In No. 27 they get protection for the quarterback, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Terrion Arnold · CB · rank 20
Terrion Arnold slid further than he should have, and pick 35 is lovely value for the cornerback. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Ja'Lynn Polk · WR · rank 55
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ja'Lynn Polk at slot 66. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 71
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brenden Rice. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 83
A reasonable price with a little left over, Roman Wilson in the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 93
Bucky Irving is a better player than the 104th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 105
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Khyree Jackson while clear needs at quarterback, edge rusher and other spots sat open.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 129
Cole Bishop at Round 5, Pick 4 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R6.13 · Pick 188 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 177
Nice patience on Jaylan Ford, who had no business lasting to the Round 6 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.5 · Pick 225 · Jayson Jones · DL · rank 296
Jayson Jones at pick 225 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.7 · Pick 227 · Elijah Simmons · DL · rank 324
They left a pile of value on the table to take Elijah Simmons this early at No. 227. It fills a real need, too.
