Houston Texans

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Texans to a C-.

by Drane04 · 2024 NFL Draft · 14 picks · 1 steals · 8 reaches
Value C+
Need B+

Future B-

When the story of this class is written, it opens with T.J. Sanders at slot 158, a reach of 46 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. That McGlothern pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The Saquon Barkley deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.

A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.32 · Pick 32 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 32
In No. 32 they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 37
A straight-up fair deal on Chop Robinson at pick No. 33, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · T'Vondre Sweat · DL · rank 57
T'Vondre Sweat at Round 2, Pick 21 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 112
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cooper Beebe. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 86
Malachi Corley at the 91st pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.30 · Pick 93 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 115
A big swing on Junior Colson at pick 93, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
R3.31 · Pick 94 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 120
Kris Abrams-Draine at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 128
Cade Stover at pick No. 95 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.13 · Pick 113 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 133
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Javon Foster well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.21 · Pick 121 · James Williams · S · rank 129
A conviction pick on James Williams at the 121st pick that the board grades a round light. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · Jordan Travis · QB · rank 143
A reach on Jordan Travis in Round 4, Pick 27; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.22 · Pick 158 · T.J. Sanders · DT · rank 204
T.J. Sanders in pick 158 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.19 · Pick 239 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 221
The board fumbled Dwight McGlothern all the way to slot 239, and they scooped it up. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R7.22 · Pick 242 · Cody Schrader · RB · rank 238
Cody Schrader in the 242nd overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
