The real work happened on the phones. The Texans fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Reaching for Davis left real value on the table behind him.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 18 they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Brian Thomas Jr. at No. 53 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Donovan Edwards at slot 95. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Ray Davis at pick 121 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had cheaper options than Jaheim Bell at the 124th overall pick, and it noticed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They went early on Jaylan Ford in pick No. 158, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
A premium they did not need to pay, Eugene Asante a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
