There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Raiders started one anyway for Tommy Mellott, 115 picks ahead of schedule.
They banked enough surplus on Gadsden II to cover a lot of smaller sins. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The back end got a real overhaul.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 6 they get a lockdown presence outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Kenneth Grant at the 41st pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A running back of that caliber at the 68th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They robbed the room for Jihaad Campbell here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 5, where Savion Williams graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Barrett Carter in the Round 5 slot, plain and simple. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Somehow Lathan Ransom was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 3, and they pounced on premier safety value. A minor itch, scratched.
Steal is underselling it; Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 212th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Oronde Gadsden II in No. 216 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached into another round for Tommy Mellott, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
