You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Vikings did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
They will need McCarthy to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. However the rest shakes out, Rosemy-Jacksaint at that price is a win they earned. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 27 they get a potential shutdown corner, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
They jumped the gun on J.J. McCarthy, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 40 with a little surplus value in Darius Robinson. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in slot 66. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
By-the-book stuff, Bralen Trice at the 67th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Michael Hall Jr. at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Trey Benson in pick 99 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Christian Mahogany in Round 4, Pick 7. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tommy Eichenberg at the 148th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They let Roger Rosengarten come to them and pounced at slot 156. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Malik Mustapha at the 173rd pick is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jaheim Bell at pick No. 176. It fills a real need, too.
Jha'Quan Jackson in the Round 6 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Michael Barrett at par in No. 216, which is nothing to complain about. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Taking Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in Round 7, Pick 10 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
