You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Vikings did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They will answer for taking DT-EDGE early while edge rusher, safety and other spots went begging. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 1 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper at No. 52 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
No edge and no loss on Brenden Rice in Round 3, Pick 31; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves edge rusher, safety and other spots untouched.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, safety and other spots still to address, they spent pick 129 on Cedric Gray, a linebacker they were not short of.
Christian Jones at pick No. 133 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
