They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Michael Penix Jr. is the Vikings' quarterback, full stop.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Newton. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Michael Penix Jr. at slot 11 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 10 with a little surplus value in Bralen Trice. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Josh Newton at the Round 4 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It adds depth where they could use a little.
No edge and no loss on Drake Nugent in the 148th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Keith Randolph Jr. in pick 160 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Layden Robinson in No. 168 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Braelon Allen at pick No. 179 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board had AJ Barner higher than the 209th overall pick, and the tight end fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
BJ Mayes in the 230th pick is fair value, right on his grade. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
