Start where it matters. The Vikings took Michael Penix Jr. to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
If Smith pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with quarterback the one that mattered most. A fair-value weekend of trading, no edge to be found.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They took Kalen King at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zak Zinter in No. 96. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They did well to land Gabriel Murphy in the 127th pick, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Zy Alexander in slot 165 is fair value, right on his grade. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Tyler Batty at the 179th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tim Smith at pick No. 233 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
