If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Vikings, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend.

That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Vikings had louder needs to answer first.

Landing Thomas Jr. that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.9 · Pick 41 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 42
J.J. McCarthy at the 41st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.20 · Pick 52 · Denzel Burke · CB · rank 56
A straight-up fair deal on Denzel Burke at Round 2, Pick 20, value and slot in agreement. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.22 · Pick 85 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 84
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 85 on Maason Smith with safety and tight end unsolved.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 74
Brian Thomas Jr. at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
R3.33 · Pick 96 · Tyler Davis · DT · rank 97
Tyler Davis in the 96th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.20 · Pick 120 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 110
Junior Colson is a better player than pick No. 120 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 143
Nice patience on Darius Robinson, who had no business lasting to pick 157. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.25 · Pick 161 · Drake Nugent · C · rank 164
No edge and no loss on Drake Nugent in slot 161; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Dylan Laube · RB · rank 159
They let Dylan Laube come to them and pounced at pick 168. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Bryce Foster · C · rank 186
No drama and no debate, Bryce Foster went about where he belonged in the 179th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.9 · Pick 184 · BJ Mayes · CB · rank 171
BJ Mayes slid further than he should have, and pick No. 184 is lovely value for the cornerback. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Jasheen Davis · DL-EDGE · rank 215
A slide stopped in the 223rd pick, with Jasheen Davis worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.21 · Pick 241 · Storm Duck · CB · rank 237
Fair-plus on Storm Duck, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
