They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Vikings' quarterback, full stop. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
Williams falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They punted on offensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The McCarthy pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd pick they get a long-term answer under center, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Brandon Dorlus in No. 59 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Quinyon Mitchell at pick 83 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Michael Hall Jr. in slot 90 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took James Williams at par in pick No. 122, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jo'Quavious Marks at Round 5, Pick 21 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ty'Ron Hopper at the 161st overall pick. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Devontez Walker graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Fair-plus on BJ Mayes, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Steal is underselling it; Miyan Williams at pick 200 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
