Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings found their guy under center in McCarthy: B.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Vikings' quarterback, full stop. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

Williams falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They punted on offensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The McCarthy pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.22 · Pick 22 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 42
In the 22nd pick they get a long-term answer under center, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Brandon Dorlus · DE-EDGE · rank 53
Brandon Dorlus in No. 59 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Quinyon Mitchell · CB · rank 75
Quinyon Mitchell at pick 83 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Michael Hall Jr. · DT · rank 88
Michael Hall Jr. in slot 90 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.22 · Pick 122 · James Williams · S · rank 123
They took James Williams at par in pick No. 122, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Jo'Quavious Marks · RB · rank 154
Jo'Quavious Marks at Round 5, Pick 21 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.25 · Pick 161 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 151
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ty'Ron Hopper at the 161st overall pick. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Devontez Walker · WR · rank 152
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Devontez Walker graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · BJ Mayes · CB · rank 172
Fair-plus on BJ Mayes, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R6.25 · Pick 200 · Miyan Williams · RB · rank 174
Steal is underselling it; Miyan Williams at pick 200 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
