This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Jacob Cowing, the No. 147 name on the board, stolen at the Round 7 slot.
J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The McCarthy reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
They read the board right and Jer'Zhan Newton was the payoff at slot 23. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Payton Wilson in pick 108 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Mohamed Kamara in No. 129 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Walter Rouse at the 157th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A conviction pick on Jordan Jefferson at pick No. 167 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Fabien Lovett in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Caedan Wallace at Round 7, Pick 10 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jacob Cowing at slot 232 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
