The Vikings spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
They will need Barrett to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 20 they get a franchise quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
They took Kris Jenkins at par in the 52nd pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Gabriel Murphy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cody Schrader. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Michael Barrett well ahead of where he belonged. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Nice patience on Jonah Monheim, who had no business lasting to the 168th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They let Zy Alexander come to them and pounced at Round 6, Pick 4. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Marques Cox slipping to pick No. 241 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
