You can draft well and still miss the point. The Vikings did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to wide receiver, which was the need that mattered most. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

Landing Berger that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · Jer'Zhan Newton · DL · rank 12
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jer'Zhan Newton. The roster fit checks out.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 43
They paid sticker price for J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 42, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 109
Good price on Tommy Eichenberg in the Round 4 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · Mohamed Kamara · DL-EDGE · rank 125
They did well to land Mohamed Kamara in the 128th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 148
Cole Bishop in Round 5, Pick 12 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.27 · Pick 163 · LaDarius Henderson · OT · rank 162
LaDarius Henderson at slot 163 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.28 · Pick 164 · Layden Robinson · OG · rank 160
Nothing to complain about; Layden Robinson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Justin Eboigbe · DL-EDGE · rank 178
They took Justin Eboigbe at par in the 179th pick, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.20 · Pick 195 · Michael Barrett · LB · rank 191
Fair-plus on Michael Barrett, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R6.36 · Pick 211 · Jalen Berger · RB · rank 197
The board had Jalen Berger higher than pick 211, and the running back fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Jabbar Muhammad · CB · rank 227
Jabbar Muhammad in slot 230 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor need, but a need all the same.
