Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B.

The Vikings did not so much draft Bryce Foster as overpay for him, 42 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Brade falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 51
A wild overpay on Kris Jenkins in slot 11, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 63
They paid sticker price for Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 2, Pick 31, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.35 · Pick 98 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 80
Steal is underselling it; Trey Benson at pick No. 98 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.22 · Pick 122 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 111
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cooper Beebe at pick 122. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · Max Melton · CB · rank 113
Max Melton at the Round 4 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 118
They read the board right and Cedric Gray was the payoff at No. 134. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · Beau Brade · S · rank 115
Beau Brade at Round 5, Pick 12 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.15 · Pick 151 · Kedon Slovis · QB · rank 138
Kedon Slovis is a better player than slot 151 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Andrew Coker · OL · rank 161
Andrew Coker in No. 157 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.27 · Pick 163 · Justin Rogers · DL · rank 167
They took Justin Rogers at par in the 163rd pick, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.28 · Pick 164 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 157
Ben Sinnott in pick 164 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.31 · Pick 167 · Moose Muhammad III · WR · rank 153
The board had Moose Muhammad III higher than the Round 5 slot, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.36 · Pick 172 · Jonah Monheim · OT · rank 168
A tidy little value on Jonah Monheim in the 172nd overall pick, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.39 · Pick 175 · T.J. Sanders · DT · rank 203
They reached into another round for T.J. Sanders, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Bryce Foster · C · rank 221
Bryce Foster at No. 179 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.34 · Pick 209 · Miyan Williams · RB · rank 190
Circle this one: Miyan Williams at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 233
By-the-book stuff, Matthew Jones at pick 230 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.18 · Pick 238 · BJ Mayes · CB · rank 216
BJ Mayes in slot 238 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R7.32 · Pick 252 · Jason Henderson · LB · rank 232
Jason Henderson in the 252nd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
