If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Vikings, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
The Newton pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback, edge rusher and other spots. The Harden pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Justin Fields gives the group a proven body among the projects.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 11 they get an anchor for the defensive front. A real need, handled.
Caelen Carson slid further than he should have, and the 108th overall pick is lovely value for the cornerback. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, edge rusher and other spots to take Josh Newton, a cornerback that was not the priority.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tommy Eichenberg in No. 157. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Sione Vaki slipping to pick 167 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tanor Bortolini in Round 6, Pick 2 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Somehow Myles Harden was still sitting there in the 232nd pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
