Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Vikings spent pick 42 on Michael Pratt, a name most had 62 spots down the list. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The McCaffrey value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver. A real need, handled.
Michael Pratt at pick 42 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaden Hicks. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Joe Milton III at the 130th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A quiet steal in the 145th pick: Cedric Gray for less than the market said. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Luke McCaffrey at Round 5, Pick 21 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jaylen Harrell in slot 166 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Gabe Hall in pick 179, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Trevor Keegan in Round 7, Pick 7 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
